Cruachan Aí Heritage Centre is the Flagship Project of Tulsk Action Group which began as a voluntary community organisation in 1992. The groups principal aim was to develop the natural resources of the area for the benefit of the whole community. In order to make this aim a reality Tulsk Action Group worked closely with state and local agencies and liaised with other voluntary organisations.
Tulsk Action Group has been involved in developing many significant community projects including a voluntary housing development, a respite centre and a new handball alley. The group also facilitated the establishment of Tulsk Parish Services which currently manages St. Ethnas Restcare Centre and Tulsk Laundry and Dry-cleaning Service.
Members of Tulsk Action Group co-ordinated the community effort which was successful in achieving first place in the county category in the Pride of Place 2005 competition for populations of less than 2,000 people.
The Cruachan Aí Heritage Centre first opened in 1999. The centre was developed to highlight, interpret and celebrate the rich archaeological heritage of the area and to act as a focus for community activities. Tulsk Action Group aims to increase tourism to the region through the ongoing development of the Cruachan Aí Heritage Centre and to continue to create direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The capital cost of Cruachan Aí Heritage Centre was supported by Fáilte Ireland, ERDF grant and a Clann Credo Loan. Grant assistance was also received from the American Ireland Funds and the Millennium Fund. Corporate sponsorship was received from many major national companies including ESB, IAWS, Dairy Gold and Golden Vale. Roscommon Association fund raising events were organised in Hartford, Connecticut; London; Galway and Dublin. A proportion of operational costs is underwritten annually by Roscommon County Council. Currently, the Cruachan Aí Heritage Centre receives employment grant assistance through a FÁS Social Economy Scheme.
The Board of Tulsk Action Group meets monthly to monitor current operations and plan future strategies. There are opportunities to join either the board of directors or sub-committee of Tulsk Action Group. New members are always very welcome.
